Application deadline for Council Election extended to Dec 1

Application deadline for the upcoming Local Council Election has been extended to December 1.

Member of Elections Commission (EC), Mohamed Shakeel reported the decision was made during the commission meeting held this Sunday morning.

Shakeel said the application deadline was extended as per request of political parties which will be competing in the election.

The original deadline was set for November 15.

Application form submissions will be accepted each official working day, and non-official working days – expect for Friday - from 8 am to 3 pm, forms will be accepted on Fridays from 3 pm to 5 pm.

Political parties; Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhoory Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP), and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) will be competing in the election.

Only names of candidates submitted by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s faction will be accepted by EC on behalf of the ruling party, PPM. And PPM and MDA will be competing in the election in accordance with its coalition agreement.

Meanwhile, main opposition party, MDP has already held its primaries. MDP and AP will be competing in the election in accordance with its coalition agreement.

Local Council Election will be held on January 14, 2016.
