Police have said that the two suspects arrested following the murder of lawyer and writer Ahmed Najeeb, have confessed to involvement in the crime.

Ahmed Murrath, 29, and Fathimath Hana, 18, were produced at Criminal Court at 17:30 today.

Superintendent of Police Mohamed Riyaz said that following the confessions in Court, the Court extended their detention period to 15 days.

“We will complete investigations and send the case to PG for prosecution as soon as possible,” Riyaz said.

Murrath, who has been convicted of several serious crimes, was released under former President Mohamed Nasheed’s ‘Second Chance’ program on 18 October 2011. He was one of the 218 released, who did not meet the criteria for release.

Najeeb was found murdered last night, in a room in M. Masroorage.
