Details revealed of girl arrested under suspicion of killing Najeeb

Police have revealed details of the 18-year old girl arrested in relation to the murder of lawyer and author Ahmed Najeeb, 65.

Najeeb was found murdered last night in a room on the upper deck of M. Masroora.

Two arrests have been made so far – Ahmed Murrath, 29, of M. Masroora; and Fathimath Hana, 18, of Rihab, Sh. Goidhoo.

Murrath was under the influence of drugs when he was taken under arrest last night.

Police said that Murrath had served 3 years, 3 moths and 22 days of his 12 year sentence, when he was released under the ‘Second Chance’ program on 18 October 2011.

A drug-related case against Murrath submitted to Police in 2008 has been sent to Prosecutor General’s Office, while another drug-related case submitted in 2010 is under investigation.

In addition, he had been sentenced to two months in prison for theft, four months in prison for escaping prison in 2005, two months in prison for assault, six months banishment for contempt of court, and six months house arrest for theft.

He had not completed any of these sentences when he was released under the Second Chance program.

Neighbours say that the two people arrested for the murder of Najeeb had been living in Masroora for some time.

Najeeb’s body was found in a large trash can in Masroora. According to witnesses, he had been injured in the face to the extent that he was unrecognisable, and that he had been dead for more than 24 hours when he was found.
