Health Ministry: Large portion of Health Promises have been fulfilled

Health Ministry has said that a large portion of the promises made in the health sector by the government has been fulfilled.

Speaking at a function held at the Faculty of Health Sciences today regarding the progress of the health sector, the State Minister of the Health Ministry, Hussain Rasheed said that 90 percent of the promises made by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in regard for the health sector has been fulfilled and achieved progress to the sector.

He said that changes are being made to the Kulhudhuffushi Hospital and contruction in underway for the Addu City Hospital under the effort to build tertiary hospitals in three areas of the country.

And he said that registrations are underway at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to appoint family doctors under the “A doctor for every family” policy. State Minister Rasheed said that previously, doctors were being appointed to the island based on the population but now they are being appointed to all islands equally. He said that it was necessary to implement the family doctor policy.

In his speech, the State Minister noted that a number of projects need by the public are ready to be lanched including a 25-story building at IGMH which would be completed in 2018.

The Health Ministry said that 38 doctors have been sent in 2014 as part of an effort to train local specialist doctors. And while thalassemia screening has been introduced in 13 atolls at the end of July 2016, it would be available in all atolls by the end of the year.
