Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has cut its tariff on sewerage services provided in H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi and K. Maafushi from MVR 100 to MVR 30.
The new rate will be applicable starting next Tuesday, November 1.
The decision was announced by Managing Director of MWSC, Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, during a press conference held this Monday morning.
Fazul said the rate had been lowered upon request of the government.
The decision comes after President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom announced during his stop at Makunudhoo – part of his recent tour of H. Dh. Atoll and Sh. Atoll – that the tariff on sewerage services would be cut down in Kulhudhuffushi due to concern by locals regarding the high tariff.
MWSC has operation centers established in both Kulhudhuffushi and Maafushi.
“The change, which will be effective starting tomorrow, is an important decision made by the government for the people,” said Fazul.
Fazul noted that the company received complaints over tariff being taken for sewerage services in the atolls, but not in Male’.
“We were taking MVR 100 from each household. The company and the government has been receiving complaints over sewerage charge being taken from the islands, but not from Male’. Sewerage charge is taken to manage the system. The company is spending massive amounts on managing sewerage systems,” he said.
Fazul said the decision would result on MWSC loosing approximately MVR 12 million it previously received from Kulhudhuffushi. But the loss is expected to be lower from Maafushi as it has a lower population.
