Strict action should be taken against those responsible for killing Najeeb: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court and Attorney General’s Office have condemned the killing of lawyer Ahmed Najeeb.

In the statement released last night, Supreme Court said that for the security of the government and society, strict action should be taken against those responsible for this crime.

They assured to do everything possible to restore justice and protect lawyers.

“Such brutal crimes are outside the realm of all sense of humanity, and respect for human dignity. They leave the society in fear and unrest,” the statement said.

The statement by AG office stated that a lawyer being the victim of this crime results in several challenges for lawyers. They urged for speedy action to prevent such activities, and said that the AG office will not hesitate to carry out its responsibilities in relation to this crime.

The AG expressed condolences to Najeeb’s family.

Najeeb’s body was found in a large trash can inside a room in M. Masroora.

Crowds gathered to IGM Hospital following his death, including Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain, Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor, and several Members of Parliament.

His funeral will be held sometime today.

Najeeb’s body is at the mortuary at Galolhu Sahara, after the necessary investigations.

Seven people have been been killed in Maldives so far this year. As such crimes increase, calls for the implementation of the death penalty are also on the rise.
