EC decides on polling stations abroad

Elections Commission made its decision a short while ago, this Monday morning, to allow polling stations abroad as was normal practice, for the upcoming Local Council Elections.

An official from EC reported to “Sun” that the decision was made by EC upon the advisory of national committee on elections.

EC had earlier decided against polling stations for Maldivians abroad.

The official from EC who spoke to “Sun” said the decision had now been revised, and that polling stations would be established in countries abroad which had a registered population of Maldivian voters going above 1,000 people.

The earlier decision not to have polling stations abroad was criticized by the main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The decision to revise the decision was proposed during the national committee meeting on October 17.
