Audit Budget passed by Majlis with 25 percent cut

The MVR 60 million proposed budget for 2017 by Auditor General’s Office was cut by 25 percent to MVR 45 million and passed by People’s Majlis this Thursday.

The budget was passed with the vote of 46 lawmakers present during the sitting.

Minister of Finance, Ahmed Munawwar was summoned to Public Finance Committee of People’s Majlis for discussions last Wednesday, during which he proposed making the budget MVR 42 million.

After discussion, Public Finance Committee decided on a MVR 45 million budget, with a contingency budget of up to MVR 2 million after discussion, if need be.

The proposed budget for 2017 submitted by Auditor General’s Office included MVR 35 million for staff salary, MVR 4 million for 15 new staff it needs to hire, and MVR 3.5 million to audit island and atoll councils of the country.
