Committee passes MVR 45 mn budget for Audit Office

Public Finance Committee of People’s Majlis has passed a MVR 45 million proposed budget for 2017, for Auditor General’s Office – a drop from the MVR 60 million budget requested by the office.

The MVR 45 million budget was passed with the majority vote of members of Public Finance Committee present during the meeting.

Public Finance Committee had met with senior officials of Auditor General’s Office, as well as Minister of Finance Ahmed Munawwar on last Wednesday to discuss the budget.

The proposed budget for 2017 submitted by Auditor General’s Office included MVR 35 million for staff salary, MVR 4 million for 15 new staff it needs to hire, and MVR 3.5 million to audit island and atoll councils of the country.

A total of MVR 60 million.

Finance Minister Munawwar pushed for a MVR 42 million budget during the meeting with committee, but the committee had decided on adding MVR 3 million more and making it MVR 45 million.

Report issued by the committee regarding their decision says that they would also allow a contingency budget of up to MVR 2 million if need be, after discussion within committee.
