Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth has resigned from his post as member of the council of ruling party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Ameeth had been filling one of the ten slots appropriated to PPM Parliamentary Group. The ten slots are filled after anonymous votes taken from the Parliamentary Group.
Ameeth spoke to “Sun” this Wednesday and said that he had filled the position with a verbal agreement within the PG that he would fill the position for only one year.
He said the one year had come up on April 30, 2016.
Ameeth’s resignation comes amid conflicts within PPM, with the party divided into two factions – those loyal to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and those loyal to Leader of PPM, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Ameeth belongs to Yameen’s faction.
When asked if his resignation had anything to do with the current conflicts within the party, Ameeth replied that “the resignation doesn’t have anything to do with that”.
Ameeth had not been in attendance during the PPM Council meeting chaired over by President Yameen on October 16, after Civil Court granted him with the authority to take over the party from Maumoon.
