2 PPM SGs battle out over authenticity

Conflicts within the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has escalated with the two secretary generals appointed by the two factions within the party battle out over authenticity.

A letter sent by Nilandhoo MP Dr. Abdulla Khaleel – appointed as PPM Secretary-General by the faction loyal to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom – was answered by Abdul Aleem – hired as PPM Secretary-General appointed by the faction loyal to Leader of PPM, former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Aleem wrote in response to the letter that Dr. Khaleel’s claim he was SG of PPM had no authenticity.

Khaleel maintains that the faction loyal to President Yameen was the “real PPM”, and that they had a court ruling backing the claim.

Khaleel had sent the letter addressed to Maumoon asking him to comply with the court ruling issued by Civil Court ordering the party’s advisor – President Yameen to take over running of the party.

Aleem wrote back that they did not accept the court ruling.

“PPM Council has made the decision to appeal the court ruling. Therefore, PPM will not comply with anything in the court ruling until due legal process is completed,” read the letter signed by Aleem.

Conflicts between Maumoon and Yameen had led to two factions forming within PPM, with both factions holding separate council meetings and passing decisions.
