Lawsuit to unseat Maumoon retracted

The Civil Court lawsuit to unseat Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had been withdrawn.

The suit, filed by two PPM council members Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid and Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam, had been scheduled for 3:30 pm this Sunday, but was withdrawn after Civil Court ruled in favor of them earlier this Sunday in another suit filed by them to force PPM to resume council meetings.

Civil Court had ordered President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to take over full control of the party and hold a council meeting within 24 hours.

The court said that given the current situation of the ruling party, it practically had no leader.

Civil Court granted Yameen – the advisor of PPM – will full control over the party, and asked that he ensure PPM was run in accordance with its constitution and rules and regulation.

Speaking during a press conference by PPM Parliamentary Group this Sunday, Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla said they no longer wanted to pursue the case to unseat Maumoon.
