Parliamentary Group of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has met with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to resolve issues within the party.
PPM PG had sent letters to both Yameen and PPM Leader, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom last week, requesting meetings to resolve the party’s internal issues.
A large number of PG members participated in the meeting with Yameen – who it said was the first to respond to the request.
The meeting, held in afternoon, stretched to approximately two hours.
Speaking to press after the meeting, Leader of PPM PG, Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik said that the discussions revolved around resolving the party’s internal issues, and that the PG received a great deal of information from Yameen.
“As you know, there’s something of a divide within PPM at the moment. There’s great concern among the general members of the party. It’s their heartfelt request that the issues be resolved. This is not something unresolvable. Looking at it, these are issues that can be resolved sitting down at a table,” said Nihan.
Nihan admitted to the factions within the party. And said that the PG wanted to solve the issue of all of the party’s work being brought to a standstill.
He said that the PG had not received a response from Maumoon. But expressed hope that the request would be accepted by him.
“If President Maumoon does not meet us, then we and our supporters can clearly say that he has abandoned some of the reforms President Maumoon had set out to bring,” said Nihan.
