MP Rifau: Subsidy issue will be resolved before you feel its impact

South Mafannu MP Abdulla Rifau has said that the government would be providing a quick solution before the people felt the impact of the decision to cut subsidies on staples.

He made the remark during SunTV show – 50 Minute – on Wednesday night.

Rifau said that cutting subsidies on staples to the general population has not detrimental to the people. Adding that the government would not do anything harmful to its people.

“I guarantee the people of Maldives that, god willing, you will see solutions to this without having to feel any impact. So be patient. Don’t fall under any unnecessary pressure,” said Rifau.

He said that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had made the decision to give subsidies on staples only to the poor after much consideration.

Rifau said that subsidy of staples cost the government MVR 140 million each year – enough, he said, to build sewerage systems in two islands.

He said that some councils were trying to derail government projects in the atolls, and said that the government would double efforts on development if they win the upcoming Local Elections.
