Minister Saeed to Hong Kong for last discussion of Free Trade Agreement

Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has left for Hong Kong tonight to take part in the last meeting to establish a Free Trade Agreement between China and the Maldives.

It has been an year since the Free Trade discussions began with China.

Talking to the press at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) before his departure, Minister Saeed said that the last meeting of the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement is being held in Hong Kong.

Minister Saeed said that this would be the last round of the discussions and what follows would be to give time to the two governments to make assessments. “After that our hope is next year, in the first three months to officially enter a Free Trade Agreement.” The Economic Minister said.

He said that the last discussions are to make decisions on the offers made by both sides.

The Economic Minister is set to return after the discussions on 30 September. The delegation to Hong Kong includes the Commissioner General of Customs, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.
