FAM forced into election after five members resign

Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has been forced into an election after five members from their Executive Committee resigned together.

After being elected as the President of FAM on 31 May 2016, Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) assigned eight people to the Executive Committee. The five members that resigned from the committee today are the former Captain of the Maldivian National Football Team, Assad Abdul Ghanee, former Physician of the National Team, Ahmed Shakeeb, a member of the Board at New Radiant Sports Club, Aishath Nazima, Mohamed Eesa and Vice President Ali Umar.

The main reason for their resignation mentioned on their letters, all five members said that the President of the Association had not discussed any decision making with the Executive Committee in the past three months.

With five members resigned at the same time, the remaining members on the Committee are Mohamed Kaleem, Ahmed Zareer and the Chairperson of Club Eagles and MP for Naifaru constituency, Ahmed Siyam.

The FAM regulation states that an election must be held if 50 percent of the Executive Committee has resigned.
