Energy Authority: Difficult to believe fire resulted from an electrical short

Energy Authority has said that it was difficult to believe the fire in G. Esbarige on Wednesday night was the result of an electrical shortage.

Director of Energy Authority, electrical engineer Muaviyath Shareef spoke to “Sun” on Thursday and said that State Electric Company provided electricity after strict procedures following electrical wiring by those authorized by the Energy Authority, and that an issue with it was unlikely.

“I find it difficult to say fire incidents are a result of electrical shorts. Only those authorized by Energy Authority are allowed to install the wiring. Fires as a result of the wiring is most often impossible than possible,” said Muaviyath.

He said that electrical issues may be possible from the misuse of adapters, but that distribution boxes would immediately cut off power in such situations.

14 people are being provided temporary housing by National Disaster Management Center after the fire in G. Esbarige, which also spread to G. Aseynaage and G. Memory Villa.
