Dr. Maajid summoned by police for questioning

Maldives Police Service has summoned former Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baaree, asking him to present himself for questioning to the MPS headquarters at 8 pm, Thursday night.

MPS information officer Ismail Ali confirmed that Dr. Maajid has been summoned, saying that he was being brought in for questioning in connection with a case being investigated by police.

He did not comment of the specifics of the case.

Maajid was recently arrested from Sri Lankan national airport, Bandaranaike International Airport under suspicion he was trying to carry out more than the limit off USD allowed out of the country per passenger.

Sri Lankan newspaper, Daily Mirror reported that the Maldivian man arrested from the airport was carrying USD 45,000 hidden inside his luggage.

He was later released and allowed to travel back to Maldives the same day.

Any amount over USD 5,000 needs a special permission by Sri Lankan Customs before it can be carried out of the country by a passenger.

Maajid is a member of Adhaalath Party, which is part of the Maldives United Opposition.
