JSC warns against undermining the dignity and decorum of the Courts of law

Some persons have been speaking of the Judiciary in a way that denigrates and hurts the reputation and dignity of the Courts of law, and undermines the decorum of the constitutionally established Judiciary in the Maldives, at various forums and the media, said the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) in a special Statement issued today.

JSC Statement said that it had come to notice repeated comments and talks at a number of public forums and media outlets that violate of the dignity protected by the Constitution and the laws of the Maldives.

JSC Statement warned that such a tradition would lead to an attitude of disrespecting of, challenging and non-compliance with the rule of law as established by the Courts of the country. The Commission therefore requested all parties to refrain from speaking in ways that undermine the dignity of the Courts of law.

“Such a tradition of undermining the dignity and decorum of the Courts of law would lead to the destruction of the constitutional system that the Maldivian people had painstakingly established in their country, and the nation will be driven into chaos, mischief and discord”, read the Statement of the JSC.

Before the Statement of the JSC, the Supreme Court of the Maldives had issued a similar Statement last week. In the Statement, the Supreme Court condemned spoken statements of Ibrahim “Ibra” Ismail, Advisor to the President Mohamed Nasheed and senior official of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), made at a gathering of MDP in K. Thulusdhoo. Following the statements of Ibra, the JSC had also stated that they would initiate investigations into the statements of Ibra which harshly attacked the law Courts of the Maldives.
