Waste Management Corporation Limited, on Wednesday, introduced awards in recognition of civilians who collect garbage thrown on the streets for their exemplary work in ensuring that the streets of Maldives remain garbage-free and clean.
The Appreciated Award and Respected Badge was launched in a ceremony held at PSM Senaco Hall by Minister of Environment and Energy, Ibrahim Toriq.
The very first Appreciated Award and Respected Badge was achieved from the hands of Minister Toriq to two individuals – Mohamed Hassan (Mohamedbe) and Hassan Mansoor.
Mohamedbe, a pickup driver was awarded for picking up garbage lying on the streets on his pickup. Mohamedbe said that he had always loved cleanliness, and often picked up garbage he saw lying on the streets on his rides.
The second award-winner, Mansoor, is a police officer.
He had picked up garbage lying on the middle of the street as he picked up his son from school.
Mansoor said that having garbage thrown on the street was an inconvenience to the whole society, and said that he tried to instill good values in his son by encouraging him to pick up garbage lying on the streets.
M7 Bookshop and Printers signed an agreement during the ceremony to promote re-use of paper.
Waste Management Corporation also launched a special allowance to encourage children not to litter, either in their homes or the streets.
