Criminal Court has issued a court order to the Maldives Police Service to arrest the former President Mohamed Nasheed, former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and the former State Minister at the Home Ministry, Akram Kamalluddin and bring them to the country.
A statement issued by the Police today said that the court order to arrest President Nasheed was acquired for the investigation into the missing sum of over MVR 1.8 million as noted by the 2011 audit report from the Auditor General and for refusing to return to the country to serve his 13-year prison sentence after departing to the UK for medical treatment while serving the sentence.
The arrest warrant for the former Vice President and the State Minister were acquired for refusing to appear at the Police Station as per the statement from the Police on 4 August, that said that Jameel and Akram would be given the opportunity to speak in their defense regarding the allegation against them if they presented themselves to the police headquarters within 14 days, which was issued after the Police could not deliver the summon notice since they were both out of the country.
On the day the press statement was issued by the Police, Maldives United Opposition (MUO) said that Dr. Jameel would return to the country after President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been arrested.
An anonymous witness who testified at the Criminal Court during the trial of then-Chief Magistrate of Alifu Dhaalu Maamingili Court, Ahmed Nihan and former Prosecutor General Muhuthaaz Muhsin alleged that Jameel and Akram had been behind the attempt.
Criminal Court sentenced the -Chief Magistrate of Alifu Dhaalu Maamingili Court and former Prosecutor General to 17 years in prison after they were found guilty in the attempt to arrest President Abdulla Yameen.
