MDP files case with ACC for PSM live broadcast of PPM event

A case has been filed by MDP with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against the state media, Public Service Media (PSM) for the live broadcast of the PPM event in Gnaviyani atoll Fuvahmulah which was part of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s campaign for the 2018 Presidential Election.

MDP said that they filed the case with the ACC today.

The opposition’s website said that broadcasting the events of a specific party and misuse of the public media without equal opportunity by the state media loses the purpose of a state media.

MDP also sent a letter to the Election’s Commission regarding the case which said that no one party should be allowed to use state land, goods or resources to hold political events according to the law.

In the letter to the Election Commission, MDP requested that the misuse of Muliaage and the state media PSM by PPM be investigated.

Leader of the PPM Parliamentary Group, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik responded to the concerns raised by MDP via Twitter asking if it was “OK” to create MNBC during the MDP Presidency and broadcast the MDP “Haruge” (political hall) 24 hours a day up to President Nasheed’s resignation.

A number of people raised concerns and criticized then MNBC, which was formed after the state media TVM was dissolved, for broadcasting some of the events of then ruling MDP. Not much attention was given by MDP to the concerns regarding the misuse of public media from then oppositions.
