Police have advised the public to be cautious and check for the latest weather updates when travelling by sea, after National Meteorological Center warned of heavy showers and thunderstorms across the country.
Met Office has issued a yellow alert between K. Atoll to G. Dh. Atoll from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm on Sunday, forecasting torrential rain with gusts of 45 to 50 miles per hour.
The Office forecasts heavy showers and thunderstorms for the rest of the country, with surface winds varying between south or south westerly at 7 to 17 miles per hour in the southern atolls, and between 15 to 25 miles per hour elsewhere.
Winds may gust to 45 to 50 miles per hour during showers.
Meanwhile, seas are expected to be moderate becoming rough during showers in southern atolls, and generally rough elsewhere, leading to the advisory by the Maldives Police Service.
Police advised in a statement it published on their official website on Sunday morning for people involved in sea transportation to follow the rules and regulations set up for their, and their passengers’ safety.
Police also advised people involved in sea transportation to check whether all the safety precautions were in place, including ensuring that the weight of cargo being transported on boats are within the permitted limit, and ensuring that emergency safety equipment are well within reach onboard passenger boats.
Police warned not to embark upon journeys without first ensuring that communication equipment onboard are fully functional, and to be alert for changes in current when harboring.
People driving vehicles have been warned not to speed due to high risk of accidents when driving on roads flooded or made slippery by the rain.
Met Office forecasts that the rainy weather conditions will continue in the country for at least the next four days.
