PPM opens registration tomorrow

Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), the new political party undergoing the process of formation, shall open the door of registration tomorrow.

Speaking to the press at the party-activity base at H. Sakeena Manzil, Dr. Mohamed Saud, Interim Registrar, said today that registration desks will be kept at Imaduddin School on Friday and Saturday. Registration shall begin during the afternoon.

Dr. Saud also said that a team shall soon visit atolls in order to register prospective members from islands. He said that a website of PPM shall soon be launched, through which registration forms can be downloaded.

When asked about the official color and logo of the party, Dr. Saud said that a committee had been established to decide on the color and logo, and that those matters would soon be finalized.

Elections Commission of the Maldives gave the official permission to commence formation process of PPM today afternoon. Elections Commission said that 703 forms requesting the permission to form the party were submitted, and that the requirement of 50 valid forms under the law had been fulfilled.

According to Article 8 (a) and (b) of the Political Parties Regulation, the request to form a political party should be accompanied by at least 50 valid forms signed by 50 different individuals. If that requirement is fulfilled, the Elections Commission should give the promoters a period of 9 months to collect the signatures of at least 3000 members for the party, conduct a general meeting of at least 300 members to finalize the party constitution and manifesto.
