Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted a resolution to the Parliament, calling on security forces to work towards ending assault and drug-related crimes in society.
The resolution was submitted by Maafannu Hulhan’gu MP Ibrahim Rasheed.
While presenting the issue, Rasheed said that the Police cause harm to citizens during political gatherings, and that an end should be put to this practice.
“I call on the Police to cease causing physical and mental harm to people during political gatherings, and to give importance to upholding peace and order in society, and dignity and honour of the Police and Military,” he said.
During the debate on this issue, MPs of MDP said that the security forces are responsible for the increase in assault and drug-related crimes. Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Eesa said that since the change of government, the Police and Military do not make enough efforts to prevent crime in the country. He noted that while claims are made that the Police were political during former President Nasheed administration, the situation is the same today.
Hithadhoo Dhekunu MP Hassan Latheef said that assault is common in the society because criminals are released from prison, and that crime cannot be prevented as long as they are loose in the society.
Feydhoo MP Alhan Fahmy said that the relevant institutions are incapable of preventing crime. The Police are way past their professionalism standards, contribute to crime in broad daylight, and lack discipline.
He called on Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed to strengthening the Police institution, and said that strict action should be taken against those who attempt to undermine the Police institution.
