Reporters started gathering outside People’s Majlis as soon as the debate on the controversial defamation and freedom of expression bill started, Monday morning.
The bill, which imposes restrictions on the media if passed, was proposed to the Majlis by ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group member, Jaufar Dhaood.

Opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has refused to back the bill, while the leader of MP Jaufar’s own party, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has also expressed disapproval over the bill.
Reporters started gathering outside Majlis as soon as it began at 9 am, protesting against restrictions being placed freedom of expression – a fundamental right guaranteed by Article 27 of Maldivian Constitution.
It’s part of the “Hathaavees Ge Dhifaaugai” (In Defense of the 27) campaign started by reporters.
Both MDP and Jumhoory Party lawmakers expressed concern over the bill during the debate, while some PPM members also expressed concern, but promised that such issues with the bill would be addressed before it is passed.
The protest has now been dismantled by the police.
Reporters involved in “Hathaavees Ge Dhifaaugai” have promised they will not stop the campaign, and will do whatever they can to make sure their concerns are addressed by the lawmakers.
