Supreme Court regulations obstruct attorneys

Several attorneys have held a meeting last night to express concern over the regulations enforced by Supreme Court to regulate the work of attorneys.

The meeting was at SHE Building at 20:00.

A participant of the meeting told Sun on the condition of anonymity that attorneys agreed at last night’s meeting to revise the regulations such that they do not obstruct the work of attorneys.

A committee was set up to initiate the process of revising the regulations.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, former Attorney General Abdullah Muiz, Kulhudhuffushi MP Mohamed Nasheed, Maafannu Uthuru MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, and several other attorneys.

Article 2.2 of the Supreme Court regulations states that attorneys can only advocate in the courts of Maldives if they have the permission to advocate, and also provided that they are registered and have the permission to advocate at the court in question.

Following the enforcement of these regulations, attorneys can now register at Civil Court, Juvenile Court, and Criminal Court. Attorneys are most concerned about the fact that they have to be registered at magistrate courts in islands as well.
