By-elections held today to elect Councilors for vacant seats in AA. Mathiveri and AA. Hangnaameedhoo Councils have been won by Jumhoory Party (JP) and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
While Mathiveri Council seat was won by JP, MDP won the Hangnaameedhoo seat.
According to temporary results published tonight by the Elections Commission, Ali Riza, JP, was elected for Mathiverhi Council with 250 votes, while Ali Risham, MDP, who contested him could muster 212 votes.
Ahmed Firaq, MDP, scored 190 votes in Hangnaameedhoo, while Ibrahim Naseer from JP won 178 votes.
Both were contested only by MDP and JP. No other parties nominated candidates for these two seats.
Elections Commission Deputy President Ahmed Fayza said, while announcing the temporary results of the by-elections, that there had not been any complaints with regard to today’s by-elections. He also said that the final results would be announced within two days.
“Everything went very well”, said Fayaz.
