Zakat being handed out at the rate of MVR 500

Ministry of Islamic Affairs has started distributing this year’s zakat al-fitr at the rate of MVR 500 for people registered as poor, in Male’.

An official from Ministry of Islamic Affairs spoke to “Sun” and said that 5,900 people had registered as poor in Male’, and that the Ministry had received over MVR 2 million in zakat by last Tuesday.

The official said that those registered as poor would be handed out MVR 500 by the Ministry, starting this Sunday.

Opportunity to make zakat payment via text message has now been closed, those who wish to make zakat payment now need to go to Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

Island councils will be carrying out zakat collection and distribution in the atolls.
