The Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), created to investigate the change of government, has said that the Timeline published recently was initiated by CNI members, and had nothing to do with the government.
Responding to a question by Sun Online at a press conference at Muleeaage today following the reconstitution of the Commission, Dr Ali Fawaz said that the Timeline was published in light of all the information received thus far, and to obtain public opinion.
“There was absolutely no discussion with the government regarding the Timeline. We have been saying in all press conferences that our work is independent. We have no discussions with or pressure from the government,” Fawaz said.
He said that information included in the Timeline can only be changed if proper evidence is received to show that the information is false, and that if such a situation arises, changes will be made to the Timeline. He added that new information had been received after publication of the Timeline.
The Judge from Singapore, G.P. Selvam, who has been appointed to CNI by the Commonwealth, said that the information collected by the CNI prior to its reconstitution is now being studied, and that this information can be used.
Selvam requested that as many people as possible provide information and evidence to the CNI. He stated that useful information in both Timelines will be studied before the CNI’s final report is compiled.
Former President Nasheed’s representative Gaha Saeed said at today’s press conference that over the past two days, the CNI had focused on studying the already-collected information.
He expressed confidence that more people will be willing to provide information to the CNI than before, as it is now made up of members who represent different views.
Dr Ibrahim Yasir mentioned that information can be relayed to the CNI by anyone until 30 June.
The CNI is also currently being assisted by retired judge of New Zealand Sir Bruce Robertson in relation to legal issues.
The CNI is currently made up of Chairperson Ismail Shafeeu, Dr Ibrahim Yasir Ahmed, Dr Ali Fawaz Shareef, retired judge of Singapore G.P. Selvam, and former President Nasheed’s representative Gaha Ahmed Saeed. Ismail Shafeeu is currently away for Umra.
The CNI recommenced work last Sunday, and has a deadline of 31 July to complete its tasks.
