Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has started reclaiming land to build an industrial zone towards south west of the capital, Male’.
The work to reclaim 6.9 hectors of land began at 11 am, Thursday.
Speaking to press after the start of the work, Minister of Housing Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the work would be carried out around the clock and would be completed by July 3.
Sand needed to reclaim land is taken from 45 meter down, near Uthuruthilafulhu.
Muizzu said that material needed to build roads after land is reclaimed have already been brought to the country. And that the bulk of the work would be complete by July 26.
Workshops and warehouses unsuitable to be located in populated areas are to be shifted to the Industrial Zone.
Muizzu said that a company would be contracted to build four-story warehouses in the area.
The MVR 159 project is funded through state budget.
The biggest work the Industrial Zone will be utilized for is waste management.
Muizzu said that green zones would be built in the reclaimed land, while roads will be built with asphalt.
