Maumoon orders no PPM committee meetings without his permission

Leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has ordered that there should not be any meetings by any PPM committee or official body without his permission.

“Sun” has been informed that Maumoon made the request with PPM Secretary-General Mohamed Tholaal on Wednesday.

Tholaal has been unavailable for comment regarding the issue.

“Sun” has been informed that Maumoon’s orders have now been conveyed to leaders of all PPM committees by Tholaal.

The decision comes after PPM parliamentarians passed the Tourism bill allowing for Ministry of Tourism to lease islands, lagoons and land for tourism without open-bidding, despite Maumoon’s express pleas not to vote for the bill, which he said was detrimental to the future of the country.

Only Maumoon’s son, MP Faaris Maumoon was the PPM lawmaker to vote against the bill.
