Police: Hulhumale, Vilimale have become safe havens for fugitives

Police has said they have noticed an increase in number fugitives accused of major crimes going to Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’ to evade arrest.

A senior police officer spoke to “Sun” and said that they have noticed an increase in number of suspected gangsters and dangerous criminals operating in Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’ – officially districts of the capital, Male’ despite being separate islands.

Police posts have been set up to increase security in both districts.

Meanwhile, fugitive Ibaadhath Latheef, 15, Love Nest, G. Dh. Thinadhoo was arrested hiding in Hulhumale’ on Friday.

He is a suspect in the murder of Faathir Mohamed Ali, 14, M. Sarumaage, Male’.

Another individual was arrested trying to board the ferry from Hulhumale’ to Male’ with a knife, the day gang violence irrupted in Male’ most recently.

Crime is also high in Vilimale’ – especially abuse and sale of narcotics.
