Mariya denies claims that she organised unrests

Mahchangolhi Uthuru MP Mariya Ahmed Didi has refuted accusations made by the Police that she contacted former President Mohamed Nasheed on the day the Police dismantled Usfasgandu, to organize the loss of peace and order in Male’.

Mariya made this statement when she was summoned to the Police today to be questioned in relation to this issue.

The Police have accused Mariya of contacting former President Nasheed by phone on 31 May to arrange for protesters to take to the streets and create unrest, and cause damage to Police vehicles and equipment.

Mariya responded to these claims by saying that she did no such thing, and that she would never cause undue harm to another human being, or encourage any such behavior.

“I believe that it is the Police officers who were involved in the coup that are making these accusations. I understand it as their attempt to create hatred towards me,” Mariya said.

Mariya went to the Police office at 14:30 today after the Parliament session, accompanied by former President Nasheed and MDP supporters.

They raised their voices against the government, and marched on Ameer Ahmed magu near Ghaazee building and MNDF Headquarters. They broke the Police cordon and gathered near Shaheed Hussain Adam building, where one person was arrested. The Police however succeeded in clearing the area, and sent back the protesters and former President Nasheed.
