Home Minister Umaru Naseer has said that the opposition has nothing they can say about gang violence and theft with the former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Gafoor being part of the opposition.
Minister Umaru told Sun Media today that MDP has previously said that it was Adheeb who was behind all the gang activity in the country. And so United Opposition formed with the involvement of the former Vice President does not have anything to say about gang violence and thefts.
Umaru said that while Adheeb was a leading figure in gang activity, former President Nasheed played a huge role in support of drugs.
The Minister said that there are two reasons that crime has been uncontrollable in the country, drugs and gangs, and said that they both lead to “that opposition alliance.”
“First, addictive substances (alcohol and drugs) were spread in the Maldives and supported saying “(should be allowed to) drink, must drink” was by one of United Opposition. Because of him the youth got addicted to drugs, got into it was encouraged to it. Next, are gangs. Even MDP says that the head of organizing and running gang activities is Adheeb. So both the problems are there.” Home Minister Umaru Naseer said.
The Opposition Coalition has called for the Home Minister’s resignation today saying that he must bear the responsibility of gang violence.
Responding to the opposition, Minister Umaru Naseer said that his resignation would not stop the gang violence and the government is working hard to put an end to it.
The Minister said that gang violence is not something new in the country and the current government has also done sufficient work to resolve the gang related crimes.
Home Minister Umaru said that MDP is not doing any responsible work with the opposition coalition.
Minister said that if they are responsible, they would “not set fire to the whole country.” He said that the United Opposition is not and opposition but a league working to put Nasheed in power.
