Possible black widow spiders found in Adi Park

Spiders – that may possibly be black widow spiders – have been discovered in Adi Park, located in Henveiru district of Male’.

Civilians living in the area reported to “Sun” that the possible black widow spiders were discovered at around 10:45 am on Wednesday in the futsal field in Adi Park.

Police have now sealed off the area.

Police media official confirmed to “Sun” that police officers had been mobilized after possible black widow spiders were found. But gave no further detail.

Black widow spiders were discovered in Male’ and Hulhumale’ in 2015 as well.

Black widow spiders can be identified by the colored, hourglass-shaped mark on their abdomens.

Its venom is reported to be 15 times stronger than a rattlesnakes’, and can cause muscle aches, nausea and paralysis of diaphragm – making breathing difficult in humans.

A black widow spider’s bite can be fatal for small children and the elderly.
