Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has said that so far there has been no work from the UK regarding the former President Mohamed Nasheed seeking political refugee status in that country.
Ex-President Mohamed Nasheed went to London in January seeking medical treatment while service a 13-year prison sentence. Since then, he has requested and received multiple extensions on his medical leave.
On 22 May, the legal counsel of the former President, Hassan Latheef told Sun Media that President Nasheed received political asylum in the UK.
Speaking at a Foreign Ministry press conference today, Minister Dunya Maumoon said that a team from the Foreign Ministry left to the UK last week to notify the British government of the status of President Nasheed currently in the UK.
Minister Dunya said that there has been no word from the UK so far.
Former President Nasheed and other political opposition currently in London have announced the formation of an opposition coalition. While the former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has been assigned as the leader of the coalition, a Shadow Cabinet of 19 ministers were announced today.
