Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has reported that they have inspected 50 percent of all shops in Male’ selling food and beverage products, and have noticed multiple issues in their operation.
Senior Scientific Officer of MFDA, Saajidha Mohamed spoke to “Sun” on Wednesday regarding the operation that started two weeks back.
She said that the authority has inspected 50 percent of all shops selling food and beverage products in Male’ so far, and that they would be able to cover all the shops by Ramadan.
Saajidha said that they have so far noticed issues with how food products are arranged, issues with some shops selling products past their expiry date, as well as a number of hygiene issues.
“There are issues of products being processed in unsuitable places. Work such as cutting chicken meat is done in unhygienic places,” said Saajidha.
She said that the authority was issuing written orders to rectify issues. And that shops that fail to rectify the issues will be penalized in the next round of inspection.
All shops selling food and beverage in Maldives will be inspected as part of the operation.
