USD 10 million from Pakistan to buy two planes and weapons

Pakistan has decided to loan USD 10 million to the Maldives to buy two planes, to be used in tactical trainings and surveillance, and vehicles to carry men along with military weapons.

Defence Minsiter Adam Shareef Umar made the announcement speaking to the press at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) after returning from his official visit to Pakistan.

Minister Adam Shareef said that the agreement on the credit line facility, agreed on President Yameen’s visit to the country in May 2015, would be signed with Pakistan in July. And he said that his visit to Pakistan would bring huge progress to the Maldivian military.

The Defence Minister said that the planes, vehicles and weapons would be acquired within the year from the funds to be provided by Pakistan. And he said that the loan would also be used to develop the human resources of the MNDF.

Minister Adam Shareef’s visit to Pakistan was on the invitation of the Pakistani Defence Minister, Khawaja Mohamed Asif. Minster Shareef met with the Pakistani President, Mamnoon Hussain on his visit along with high ranking officials of the Pakistani Army.

The Minister also visited some of the weapons factories and airplane companies on his visit. He also made a call on the efforts of the Pakistani government against terrorism.

Noting that the goal of his Pakistani visit was achieved, Minister Adam Shareef said that the counter-terrorism center to be established with Pakistan was also discussed.

And so the Pakistani government assured the assistance of the Pakistani experts to the Maldives in the project.
