Maldives Transporting and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said that the project to reclaim land towards south-west of Male’, and build and industrial village there was challenging work for the company.
CEO of MTCC, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem spoke to “Sun” on Thursday and said that they were facing challenges due to the bad weather conditions.

“We had bad weather, rough seas recently. We faced difficulties during that time because the sea was pretty rough with the wind coming in from the west. In any case, we are doing the work with a barge in the ocean, and with equipment on board the barge. This is why is say it’s challenging work,” said Haleem.
Haleem said he was still hopeful the project would be completed within the given time frame despite the challenges.
He said the company was also working on opening up the channel towards the west.
“Once the channel is opened up, we can start sealing off the entire area that will be reclaimed as land. It will be done within the next four days or so. The work to seal off the area, I mean.
This is when the land reclamation starts,” said Haleem.

He said that once land was reclaimed, work would start on constructing the roads of the industrial village.
He said the company now has the equipment it needs for the work.
The MVR 159 million project is funded through state budget.
Agreement between MTCC and Maldivian government for the project was signed on January 13.
Minister of Housing Infrastructure, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that the reclaimed land will be developed as “Male’ Industrial Village”, and that waste management and important industrial businesses run in Male’ will be shifted there.
The industrial village will also include a green zone.
