President sends condolences, orders flags to fly half-mast with Zahir Naseer’s death

President Abdulla Yameen has sent his condolences to the family of Mohamed Zahir Naseer and has ordered for national flags to fly half-mast on Thursday in recognition of his priceless service to the state – especially in the sporting field.

Zahir Naseer - who was conferred Most Honorable Order of Distinguished Rule of Izzudheen, Nishaan Izzuddeen Izzathuge Verikan in 2011 - passed away in his home as dawn, Wednesday, at the age of 87 after a long spell of illness.

President Yameen called Zahir Naseer’s family and said that he heard the news of his death with deep sadness.

He noted that Zahir Naseer has provided long service to Maldivian government and the people of Maldives, and made great contributions to develop the country’s sporting industry.

Zahir Naseer's nephew, Mohamed Nashid spoke to “Sun” and said that he had been ill for about four months. And that he had been dead when taken to hospital by family after he showed no movement.

Zahir Naseer was awarded National Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to journalism by Maldives Media Council just this month – on May 3.
