Assistance of Islamic countries is vital right now: Gayoom

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that the assistance and cooperation of Islamic Arab countries is currently vital for the Maldives.

Speaking at the Constituent Council of the Muslim World League in Makkah, Gayoom said that the Maldives is currently facing various challenges, and that assistance and cooperation of Arab countries are necessary to fight these political and economic challenges.

“...This includes an economic downturn, loss of peace and order, and efforts by groups of people to weaken people’s Islamic faith,” Gayoom said.

Gayoom further said in his speech that assistance of Islamic countries is necessary especially to protect the Islamic faith among the people of Maldives, and to develop the Islamic education and services in the country.

Gayoom also stated in his speech that President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s government is legitimate.
