Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, launched H. A. Hoarafushi coastal protection project on Monday.
Thoriq, along with parliamentarian and leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) - Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, Minister of Economic Development - Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Youth and Sports - Ahmed Zuhoor, and Minister of Tourism - Moosa Zameer are currently in
Hoarafushi, accompanying President Abdulla Yameen in his official visit to the island.
The MVR 19.1 million project was assigned to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on August 9, 2015.
Two areas of the island that are facing land erosion – northern beach and north-east beach - will be protected with seawalls as part of the project
The seawall to north of the island will cover 570 meters and the seawall to the north-east of the island will stretch 230 meters.
The project is scheduled to be complete by November 10.
Toriq said that Environment Ministry was currently overseeing coastal management projects in over 31 islands.
