Police have confirmed that the man who drove a boat into Tsunami Monument on Friday morning was released by court after he was taken under arrest.
The crash – which took place at 10:30 am - damaged a 25-foot area of railing built around the monument.
Police said Friday night that the man had tested positive for drugs, and did not have a license to operate a boat.
Police service said that the man was reprimanded and released when taken to court with the stipulation that he fully cooperate with the investigation.
Police Information Officer, Chief Station Inspector Ismail Ali said that the man arrested had a history of similar incidents. And that he had been reprimanded for similar incidents in the past.
“He has been advised before not to operate boats without a license. He wasn’t arrested just because of the accident. He was arrested because of his actions,” said Ismail.
Tsunami Monument was built at the cost of around MVR 3 million.
