National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) has said that over nine islands have been reported to be affected by the rain across the country and are following up on the status of the islands.
Media Coordinator of the NDMC, Hisaan Hassan told Sun Media that at the time, their assistance is mainly focused on Thaa Thimarafushi, Hirilandhoo and Veymandoo which were flooded in the rain.
He said that public and the institutes of Thimarafushi, where it is still raining, are working together to make a water way on the flooded roads to lead the water out to the ocean. But there are challenges to the task due to lack of resources.
And a team from the NDMC is preparing to leave for the island.
President of Thimarafushi Island Council, Hussein Shareef told Sun Media today that about 80 houses in the island have been affected by the flooding. And he said that rain has been falling continuously in the island for the past two days.
NDMC said that damages due to rain have been reported by Gan, Fonadhoo and Funahandhoo in Laamu atoll and Villingili and Gemanafushi from Gaafu Alifu atoll and Alifu Alifu Ukulhas.
Gaafu Alifu Villingili Island Council said that the Atoll Education Center on the island has been flooded due to the rain and has been closed for the past two days.
While about 20 houses have been affected by the water, the institutes and the public are out on the roads trying to make a water way according to the Island Council.
NDMC said that pump stations on the island have also been affected and there is sewage leaking at some of the houses on the island.
The latest Yellow Alert issued by the Maldives Meteorological Service was for the atolls between Kaafu and Huvadhoo Atoll where winds are expected at 55 miles an hour.
