Home Minister Umar Naseer has asked the telecommunication companies, Dhiraagu and Ooredoo to reduce the mobile recharge amounts from the ATMs.
Deputy Home Minister, Ahmed Saleem told Sun Media today that the Home Minister made the decision with the increase of cons stealing from the people’s accounts and recharging.
He said that under the current regulation, over MVR 100,000 can be recharged per day through ATMs. Deputy Minister Saleem said that a number of cases where people have been conned to get mobile credit recharge have been reported to the Police.
Home Minister ordered to reduce the credit recharged amount to MVR500.
Deputy Minister Saleem said that while Maldives is a small country, there are recharge shops very close by. And so there is no difficulty to the general public in taking such measures while large amounts of recharges are being made by misleading people.
“At Home Minister, after major discussions this decision was made. To stop things like this, this step was taken.” Deputy Home Minister Ahmed Saleem said.
He said that banks are responsible when thefts occur from the accounts in other countries but the banking system in the Maldives does not have that regulation.
There is a rise in calls being made in the name of different promotions to con money from individuals.
Relevant institutes have stated that no company would call any citizen asking for any amount of money.
