MWSC awarded 9 water and sewerage projects, valuing total MVR 312 mn

Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) was awarded construction of water systems and sewerage systems in four islands, and a sewerage system in an additional island on Wednesday.

Agreement was signed between Environment Ministry and MWSC to construct water and sewerage systems in B. Thulhaadhoo, R. Hulhudhuffaaru, N. Velidhoo and G. A. Velimaafushi, as well as a sewerage system G. A. Gaddhoo; in a ceremony held at Central Hotel.

The agreement was signed on behalf of Environment Ministry by Environment Minister Toriq Ibrahim, and on behalf of MWSC by the company’s Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.

The projects are being funded through state budget and loan aid from OPEC Fund for International Development.

Speaking during the ceremony, Toriq said that the value of all nine projects combined was MVR 312 million. And that the projects in the five islands would be run simultaneously.

The projects comprise of establishing a water system network, water plants, storage tanks, sewerage networks and sewerage treatment plants, as well as connecting water and sewerage systems to households.

Toriq said that MWSC has been tasked to complete the projects within 504 days. And that it was the aim of the government to have the services available to the islands within 2017.

Fazul also spoke during the ceremony, saying that MWSC was one of the most capable companies in the country at the moment when it comes to water and sewerage projects. And that the company would complete the projects given to them within the time period allocated.
