President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that a water system would be established in Laamu Gan in the near future.
Speaking at the inauguration of the sewage system in Laamu Gan today, President Yameen said that at an island as big as Gan, a water system must be established as well.
The President said that the government receives foreign aid most of the time for the sewage, water and energy projects.
“For example if a project like is going, this is we are talking about an 88 million (Maldivian) Ruffiya project. The water and sewage system is a bigger project than this.” President Yameen said.
The President said that looking at the government debt in the past four to five years; it cannot be repaid in any way other than by the government earning the money. And cannot just be “written down on the paper” as debt.
President Yameen said that the Maldives have spent by taking loans from foreign banks. And misrepresenting the country abroad is not something that could increase the foreign aid that the country receives.
The sewage system inaugurated at Gan today was completed with the free aid from Agence France Development (AFD) contracted to Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) in 2014.
Environment Ministry says that MVR 88.5 million was spent from the AFD free aid and government funds combined for the project.
