Alifu Dhaalu Dhidhdhoo has started using renewable energy during the day-time.
In a ceremony held on Thursday evening, the renewable energy was inaugurated at the island by the Environment Minister, Thoriq Ibrahim.
The project was funded by the Asia Development Bank and the Maldivian state budget.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq said that with the establishment of renewable energy producing system in Dhidhdhoo can produce over 40 percent of the electricity needed at day-time.
“In day-time to give electricity during the day, the generator doesn’t need to be run long. Oil costs would get smaller. The engine sound won’t be heard for a long time.” Minister Thoriq said.
The Environment Minister said that the government project to make 30 percent of the electricity used in the islands across the country to be of renewable energy is progressing very quickly.
Managing Director of the State Electric Company (STELCO), Abdul Shukoor also spoke at the ceremony saying that a system would established so that at least two islands from those STELCO is providing energy would get solar panels every year.
While the government is set to proceed with the renewable energy project in a number of islands, Vaavu atoll Rakeedhoo began using renewable energy last month.
