President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that it is not acceptable to protest and rally in such a way that it disrupts the public and even if it is his own party taking to the streets, they will be dispersed.
Speaking at the harbor opening ceremony at Dh. Maaenboodhoo today, President Yameen said that his intention as the president is not to make things difficult for the people. And he said that a PPM Government would not govern in way that negatively affects the people. President Yameen said that even if other party’s actions are disrupting the daily lives of the people, the current government will stop them.
“We don’t believe that protests can be held on the crowded streets of Malé all the time. We don’t believe that protesting sitting in the middle of an intersection disrupting foot traffic and vehicles on the streets should be allowed. Even if my own party does it, it will be dispersed.” President Yameen said.
The President said that even as an opposition party, PPM worked in way that would not trouble the people. President said that the people want protests in matters that goes against the people’s rights and interests.
President also responded to the verbal attacks of the oppositions at the ceremony today. And so President Yameen said that while the oppositions are protesting on the streets, they are hesitant on protesting against some things indicating to the religious extremism.
